The challenge

Gruber Logistics is a transport and logistics company with deep roots: founded in 1936 in the mountains of Alto Adige, it has grown steadily over the decades and built a presence in a number of countries while remaining firmly family-run.

European reporting requirements did not yet apply to it, but Gruber Logistics chose voluntarily to publish its first sustainability report back in 2022, a clear signal of its commitment to transparency and corporate responsibility.

The company was already working to reduce the environmental impact of transport, with investments in biofuels, electric vehicles, and intermodal shipping. It decided to take its ESG approach a step further, bringing in Up2You to draft the report. The goal was to give structured recognition to its work on social and governance issues alongside the environmental side.

Needs and objectives

Keep track of the work already underway
Several sustainability initiatives were already running inside the company, but it needed a tool that could pull them together and organize them coherently.

Answer customer requests
Working with large international companies is what pushed Gruber Logistics to begin reporting on ESG. No regulation required it; the company chose voluntarily to align with the standards set by its most forward-looking customers.

Moving from GRI to ESRS indicators
The company adopted the ESRS indicators as soon as the new sustainability reporting rules introduced them, so it would be ready when reporting shifts from voluntary to mandatory.

Initial challenges

Strengthen strategic communication
Gruber Logistics was already very active in promoting sustainability across environmental, social, and governance topics, but it needed an effective way to represent that commitment and lay out its ESG strategy both internally and externally. The reporting tool also had to centralize information and track it in service of the company's sustainability targets.

Standardize the set of indicators
Organic growth over the past few years made it steadily harder to build a common set of indicators spanning every branch of the business, which is what it takes to get a clear, unambiguous read on ESG progress.

Why Gruber Logistics chose Up2You

  • An innovative company with a responsive team.
  • Up2You's command of the ESRS standards, having been among the first to align with the new rules on the subject.
  • Up2You's ability to adapt to the needs of the client

The project

Work with Gruber Logistics began with an interactive workshop for the company's management team. That session worked through the financial materiality assessment, identifying and evaluating the risks and opportunities most relevant to the business, with the aim of building double materiality into the 2024 sustainability report.

Next, Up2You defined the KPIs for measuring company performance, in line with the ESRS indicators. Once those were set, work moved to configuring the Choral platform, followed by collecting the data required.

With all the information in hand, the next phase was updating the sustainability report from the prior year. That took several months, given how intricate Gruber Logistics' corporate structure is.

Thanks to the work with Up2You, Gruber Logistics now has a structured, complete document that brings together every piece of company information tied to sustainability and provides a solid foundation for the 2025 report, already being scoped. The report is not only a communication tool; it has become a decision-making resource that is transparent and useful both inside the company and with external stakeholders. Active involvement from senior leadership made it possible to build ESG topics into day-to-day decision-making, turning them into strategic drivers for the company's future.

In a market where sustainability reporting is still mostly handled by large companies under a legal obligation, Gruber Logistics' decision to act voluntarily has been a significant strength. It put the company in a position to engage with the sector's major international players and meet their requirements, earning a competitive advantage over its rivals.
