Practical Guide to Guarantees of Origin
What are Guarantees of Origin?
Le Guarantees of Origin (GO) they are electronic certificates that prove, in a traceable and standardized way, that 1 MWh of electricity was produced by Renewable sources within the European Union.
Every time a renewable plant produces 1 MWh, a corresponding GO is issued: in this way, the renewable quality of energy is “separated” from the physical flow of electricity on the grid.
1 Guarantee of Origin = 1 MWh of renewable energy produced.
How can a renewable supply be purchased?
When a company decides to switch to a renewable electricity supply, it has two main options available, both solutions make it possible to make energy consumption more sustainable, but they differ in costs, flexibility and management methods.
Renewable supply agreement
In this case, the company signs an agreement with the supplier in which it is established that the energy supplied will be covered by renewable sources. With the renewable supply contract alone, it is not guaranteed that the company will receive the Guarantee of Origin certificates in its name directly.
Buy Guarantees of Origin directly from the market
In the second case, however, the company can buy the GO directly from the market. In this second scenario, the organization may request that the GO be registered in its name and canceled specifically for its consumption, making everything much clearer and more traceable.
