Carbon budget

The carbon budget, or budget of CO₂, indicates the amount of greenhouse gases that humankind "is allowed" to emit into the atmosphere to meet the 1.5ºC target of the Paris Agreement. According to the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change, with current emissions this budget will be exhausted by early 2028, while for the 2.0 ºC goal we still have until the end of 2045.

In practice, the carbon budget represents the amount of CO₂ we can still emit to succeed in containing global temperature rise (yes, that the temperature will rise is a fact!) within 1.5 ºC or 2 ºC.
