The challenge

Altromercato
is the largest Italian social enterprise in fair trade. For decades it has built ethical supply chains for raw materials, guaranteeing a production model that respects the planet and its resources and delivering a triple value of economic, social, and climate justice.

To strengthen its sustainability commitment further, Altromercato chose to start a program with Up2You. The first step was calculating its Corporate Carbon Footprint with CliMax, the Up2You platform dedicated to measuring emissions.

In parallel, the company began producing its social report, aligned with the GRI Standards, in Choral, the second Up2You platform, built to support companies with ESG reporting.

Finally, working with Up2You, Altromercato was able to meet the requirements of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which governs supply chains and promotes sustainable practices to counter deforestation.

Needs and objectives

Formalize practices already in place
By its very nature, Altromercato was already highly active on sustainability. Taking its formal and informal practices digital was the common ground it found with Up2You.

Analyze and measure impact
Analyzing its impact and optimizing data collection so it could see where to improve was one of Altromercato's main needs, partly as a way to work out how to allocate available resources better.

Communicate externally
Analyzing and measuring impact gave the company a complete overview of everything Altromercato does, and a better way to communicate it externally and to stakeholders.

Initial challenges

Meeting the requirements of the EUDR
Working mainly in cocoa and coffee supply chains, and with large companies among its partners, Altromercato faced the challenge of bringing itself into line with the EUDR.

Managing a large volume of data
The complexity of Altromercato's business called for significant effort to gather the data required, on top of which came the demands of the new regulations.

Avoiding a complicated process
Meeting the requirements of regulations such as the EUDR can create complexity in compliance processes, especially at multi-product, multichannel, multi-stakeholder companies like Altromercato.

Why Altromercato chose Up2You

  • A straightforward approach that makes often complex topics easier to tackle.
  • A young team that adapts to the client's needs.
  • Easy conversations with an Up2You team that is always well prepared and ready to answer any question.
  • Proprietary technology that makes calculation and reporting work significantly simpler and faster.

The project

The collaboration got under way in April 2025, starting with the work required for EUDR compliance, while the social report track opened with an analysis of industry trends and competitors.

An introductory workshop followed, aligning Altromercato's staff on the objectives and the work ahead, and then came onboarding onto the proprietary Choral platform.

Next, the team validated the material topics with company management and laid the groundwork for thinking through sustainability objectives for the next five years.

The KPIs to be set up in Choral were defined next, and the necessary data was then collected. The final phase of the work, which ran over the following weeks, was devoted to drafting the social report.

In parallel, work also began on calculating the Corporate Carbon Footprint with CliMax, Up2You's second proprietary platform. It started in May with an introductory workshop and continued over the summer with platform configuration.

Next, data was collected on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, leading to the closing phase of the project: analysis of the results and sharing final feedback with the Altromercato team.
