MediaWorld: Investing in mitigation through carbon credits from the Blue Valley – Val Dogà project
The challenge
MediaWorld is a leader in consumer electronics and the services that go with them. Part of MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group (CECONOMY AG), MediaWorld is evolving from a product retailer into an omnichannel services platform through its “Experience Electronics” concept. The company pursues SBTi-aligned targets, working to cut its direct and indirect emissions and to improve energy efficiency both in its own operations and across its product range. It also offers lower-consumption and refurbished products, plus circular services (used-device trade-in and appraisal, fast repairs), to encourage more sustainable consumption.
In 2025, MediaWorld adopted an offsetting strategy for its direct and indirect emissions. To do so, it chose Up2You for support in investing in carbon credits generated by the Blue Valley project. Located in the Venetian Lagoon, the project focuses on the natural absorption of greenhouse gases in a lagoon ecosystem. In April 2025, members of MediaWorld's Board of Directors also visited the project to see its progress firsthand.

Needs and objectives
Align with the global strategy
The company is part of the CECONOMY group, which in 2021 signed on to the European Commission's sustainable consumption pledge. To move its emissions offsetting forward, MediaWorld looked for a professional, accredited partner to complete the credit purchase.
Invest in domestic projects
MediaWorld operates across Italy, so investing in high-quality projects located in the country is a matter of consistency, local presence, and value for its customers.
Meet stakeholder expectations
Market stakeholders (banks and institutional investors) are paying ever closer attention to the activities and results of sustainability programs.
Initial challenges
Finding Italian projects
The most widely recognized international certifications are not currently available in Italy. Even so, MediaWorld put forward a local project focused on carbon removal. Choosing the Val Dogà project shows the group's intent to promote advanced offsetting methods in Europe as well.
Access to certified projects
MediaWorld chose an experienced partner to access offsetting initiatives, with the goal of getting professional guidance from project selection through to finalizing the related certificates.
Alignment with corporate targets
MediaWorld contributes to the climate targets of the group it belongs to, in line with the European Commission's sustainable consumption pledge.
Why MediaWorld Italia chose Up2You
- Access to a broad portfolio of projects, which made it possible to identify the most effective option and the one best suited to MediaWorld's needs.
- Expert guidance in accessing offsetting initiatives and selecting projects with recognized certifications.

The project
The work with MediaWorld began with a presentation and review of Up2You's project portfolio. In this introductory phase, the team was walked through the different types of projects available and how carbon credits work. The discussion made it possible to align expectations and objectives from the outset, clarifying the role of offsetting within MediaWorld's overall climate strategy.
Up2You then mapped the company's needs and used them to select the project best suited to MediaWorld. The choice fell on Blue Valley in Val Dogà, a project located in the Venetian Lagoon.
The project contributes not only to emissions reduction and removal through carbon storage in coastal environments, but also to biodiversity protection and the well-being of local communities, thanks to the promotion of sustainable production practices. In doing so, it supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 13 – Climate Action, and it generates environmental and social co-benefits consistent with MediaWorld's ESG priorities.
Once the initiative was selected, Up2You supported MediaWorld on the operational side: checking the availability of the credits and then retiring them. With that phase complete, in April 2025 members of MediaWorld's Board of Directors visited the Val Dogà site to see the work firsthand, talk with the technical leads, and take a closer look at how a blue carbon offsetting project works.
